GLOSSING IS ALSO ENGLISH
Post Body

Apologies for yelling.

For y'all here wanting gloss edits, advice, etc.

  • glossing is also English

  • as a visual language, ASL doesn't have a standard written form

  • a gloss is a 1:1 Sign-English correspondence for Signs that have an equivalency. Not all Signs have a 1:1 English equivalency and Signs can have different meaning depending on the context of the conversation, the facial expression a Signer is making, other body movements (e.g. shaking one's head "no" at the same time as doing a Sign to indicate the negative) etc

  • a gloss can be a helpful script for you to remember a topic you're trying to express, but ASL is more about how you are using your Signing Space to show your message. Borrowing from a recent post here, you don't Sign HAS for MY HOUSE HAS WINDOWS. You sign MY HOUSE and then show your house in the imaginary set that is your Signing Space. HOUSE - HERE (point) - WINDOWS - 4. Then if it's important to context of your message, describe the windows. E.g. is one small, is one on the second floor, does one have a sticky lock to it?
