I am Hard Of Hearing. Even when wearing my hearing aids I still struggle with following conversations and I know I miss at least 50% of what is being said. I try to follow along and lipread but it's difficult and I never get 100% of what's going on. I use ASL and while I am not 100% fluent yet I am learning and know quite a bit. I find it very helpful in conversation and I like to use interpreters where they are available. I have my best friend who took ASL in high school and so she helps me a lot when I'm struggling but I wish my parents knew at least SOME sign to help me. I have to guess what they are saying half the time and it sucks. My mom is hard of hearing as well (intentional lower case) but she uses hearing aids and hasn't learned any ASL for herself. While of course I support her ability to choose, I find it odd that even though I brought it up and she seemed interested, we're back to square one and I'm lost all the time.
How do I ask my parents to learn at least some signs to help me? They're used to my hearing being normal because I was fully hearing when I was born but lost hearing over the years. No one in my family signs and honestly it's very isolating. I feel more overwhelmed because I noticed my hearing has been getting even worse lately.
Any advice?
