I came out 2 years ago publicly and have been going by my preferred pronouns at my company for a while now. For the most part everyone on my team is 100% on board except one person (older conservative white male, go figure) who continues to call me he/him. He did meet me first when I was presenting as a male but I transitioned a year later. I feel like I shouldn’t care that much but I’m pretty passable and most assume she/her when they see me but new people get confused when he starts using different pronouns and then they start using the wrong ones and I have to come out to basically everyone new so people can address me my preferred way.
I’ve talked to HR who did diversity training which did touch on preferred pronouns among other things. He has also apologized at one point for using the incorrect pronouns in the past and does occasionally use my correct pronouns but still 90% of the time I’m he/him.
When he does it now it puts me in a bad mood and makes me not even want to work with him. I feel like maybe some people will never fully get it and maybe that’s something I have to accept? Should I just let it go and accept that I’m just going to have some people like this in my life (especially those who knew me pre-transition), or should I continue to try to push to find a solution?
Edit: Thank you everyone for the advice, you all have given me the courage and motivation to continue the fight. I am thinking of taking a three pronged approach to this starting tomorrow: 1. I like the idea of correcting him and logging it in front of him with the intent of taking it to HR if it doesn’t change. 2. I’m going to enlist a few coworkers that have my back to start correcting him as well on my behalf, right now everyone kind of just rolls their eyes but I’m going to ask them for the help. 3. I’m going to talk to my manager and let him know that I’m looking for employment and elsewhere due to this issue. It’s not entirely untrue either, I’ve been interviewing at other places because I just want that clean slate start and even been offered a few positions, just none were quite the right fit yet but that won’t always be the case.
