Hi folks,
We've noticed several discussions around here about, and we're sure you've likely noticed several other trans subreddits temporarily going private because of, the current spate of transphobic accounts follow-trolling trans and GNC users on Reddit.
We wanted to both
- Consolidate discussion and updates to the situation here, instead of across multiple short-lived threads, and
- Address what can be done as responses to the situation continue to evolve.
At present, while we have no intent to make this subreddit private, we also don't actually have any ability to mitigate the issue at hand (as it's a Reddit-wide feature, and thus in the hands of the company's admin and development teams). The best (and really only) thing you can do, as with any other attempt at trolling, is just ignore it.
As many of you know, around two months ago, we shared that we’d be introducing the ability to opt out of being followed. While that work had been in planning, in light of recent events, we’ve decided to begin work right away to address the issue. We’ll provide another update as soon as it’s ready — this will be in the magnitude of weeks, not months.
In the meantime, we wanted to make sure you are all aware of how you can take action to protect yourself immediately:
Block the abusive users, which removes them from your follower list completely
Blocking a user on the iOS app
Opt out of push notifications and emails via account settings (manage notifications and manage emails)
