There’s a popular askreddit post going around asking why people didn’t vote in the U.S. primary elections. And these answers have me pissed.

There’s a sizable group of people just saying that they don’t give a fuck, or that the system is stupid or that it just doesn’t really affect them.

I WISH it didn’t affect me! I WISH I could just not care about voting. To have that much damn privilege.

Who is president and how many democrats there are in positions of power literally determines:

1. If insurance would even be able to cover GRS one day

2. If insurance would cover my $60/month prescription

3. Whether we’re used as scapegoats for whatever the fuck bigots want to blame us for (trans military ban anyone?)

And not just for me, but transgender people in general:

1. A lot of us end up kicked out of our home. The right people in Congress could literally improve minimum wage, guarantee housing/employment

2. The right person in Congress/SCOTUS could determine whether people can or not be discriminated against for their gender/gender expression. That could also help with keeping employment.

There’s just so much fundamental bullshit that can very easily change our lives dramatically by who’s in power, and all of these privileged mfuckers aren’t voting cause they “don’t care.”

EDIT: Because this has come up so many times in the comments, voting against Trump should be our top priority. Every leader on the democratic side has some sort of policy plan that is pro-trans people. Down-ballot voting for the Democrats will give us the best chance at being respected and laws passed to help our situations. Voting isn’t a magic solution to all the problems we face but it will help.

And if you’re so damn adamant that it’s Bernie or you’re not voting, you’re EXACTLY the type of people that are going to hand the election to the transphobes on the right. Some of Biden’s and Bernie’s policies overlap! You should want half of a really nice cake you’ve been looking forward to even if you can’t get the whole thing if the alternative is literally a cow pie.
