Hi, I am a 30yo transwoman and mechanical engineer currently working at a power station. I am looking for resources for any good HR/company policies for people transitioning in the workplace. Particularly around bathroom access, pronouns, uniforms etc
As a bit of a background, I came out and began living as my affirmed gender at work nearly 3 years ago, but even until now my company has not put in place any formal policies for someone transitioning at work. When I first came out HR had an informal discussion with my team and manager, who have all been super supportive and also contacted the women on site to let them know that I would be using the female restrooms. All went very smoothly until a year ago when one of the older women on site took offense that I didn’t pass yet, that I didn’t put the effort in to come to work presenting female (ie I just wear the hi vis work clothing like the other engineers), that I still had a deep voice etc. She basically felt that she had agreed to let me use the bathrooms on the basis that I would look/behave indistinguishable female by now and because I hadn’t she not only didn’t want me in the bathrooms anymore she flat out accused me of making up my trans identity. This lead to a campaign between her and a small minority of women who basically tried to bully and intimidate me out of the female bathrooms, which resulted in HR stepping in and formally disciplining all of them. They then did a one of targeted training course on trans specific discrimination with the women on site, unfortunately the ring leader lady wasn’t present on the day and as far as I am aware has never received the training.
I approached HR and my union rep and asked for a formal policy to be implemented to protect transgender employees, pointing out that I would like have never been directly bullied if these protections had been formalized when I first came out. They are more than happy to implement something, but have asked if I can source some good examples that I am happy with that they can base this on. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
