As a true transfem stereotype I've been working in tech for basically my whole career, and since Covid have been remote fulltime. I'm coming up on 3 months on hormones now, and while I'm out to most of my close friends and family at the point I'm truly unsure how and when to go about coming out at the workplace. I'm still pretty far from passing, so atm my plan is to continue to boymode in all work calls and meetings, but I know it's likely a matter of time until either I become visibly changed enough that people start noticing something is up or I have to fly into the office for a visit (they like to bring remote workers in 1x a year) and people notice it then.
So while it's still a ways off, I want to have some plan in mind for how to come out when the moment feels right and I'm curious what experiences you folks have had coming out in similar situations where all your workplace interactions are through chats and video calls. Did you come out to your manager first and then talk to HR to change name and gender in your records? Vice versa? Did you announce it to everyone on Slack/Teams or did you just update name/pronouns/profile pic and let everyone connect the dots themselves? Has anyone just avoided telling their current employer and instead opted to apply to new jobs with your preferred name and pronouns instead? Would love to hear your experiences and any advice y'all have on this topic
