Ever had a house-sitter?

Thinking actually about dog sitters and then I came to think about maybe a house-sitter instead.. Look after the dog at home, water my plants etc..
But how does it work? Do you pay a house sitter like you pay a dog sitter - or do they just get the free use of your house? Where do you find people, vetting etc?
Just kinda thinking out loud at the moment. Put the dog in kennels, leave it with somebody, get a house sitter..
