Post Body

Good day! I’m a 4th year EU medicine student and after the 2 years that I have left I’m planning to permanently leave the country. I’m making these posts (there will be near identical posts on other subreddits corresponding to various countries) so I can ask for some informed opinions before I can properly choose the right country for me. Following, will be several questions regarding the traits that interest me the most, although, if I am to be honest with myself, only the first one should be my priority, therefore, feel free to skip the rest. Nevertheless, I should mention that I am not particularly interested in any medical field (as I do not find any other field of work exciting since, at the end of the day, work is still work that I have to do so as not to starve). With this in mind, I am currently taking into consideration diagnostic radiology as a possible path, since I hope that one day I will be able to work remotely. However, if you reckon I could get an even more laid back schedule through another specialty, I am open to suggestions. Thanks much and keep on keepin’ on!

1.    How efficient is the medical residency here compared to other European countries? Yes, I am only interested in having as much spare time as possible (not money nor fame), but I am willing to work for these 6 years in order to learn how to properly do my job. This does not mean that I am also willing to let colleagues/higher-ups take advantage of me and/or burn myself out through countless 24-hour unpaid shifts. So, would residency here make me a good radiologist? Would the medics here be willing to train me well? Or would I simply have to “learn it all by myself” just like everywhere else?

2.    What cities/hospitals do you find the best for learning radiology? Why do you consider them to be the best? Can these cities also be seen as safe for living?

3.    What are the requirements to be employed in these hospitals? Do I need to send e-mails in which I tell them why I want to go there alongside a CV? Are the degree that I obtain at the end of the college and a language certificate enough as far as documents are concerned? Does the language certificate need to be C1 or would a B2 also be sufficient? Note that I do not come from Germany, France or Italy. I am mentioning this since I heard that Switzerland usually hires medics that have at least studied in one of these countries for a few years.

4.    Would the payment be enough to cover for rent and food? If so, would it barely cover these expenses or would it be more than enough?

5.    Does this country have troubles with terrorism or was there a significant increase in criminality in the last 10 years due to high numbers of immigrants?

6.    Do most of the citizens abide by the law? Do the police truly enforce said law (in a rightful and non-discriminatory way, mind you) or do they never bat an eye if a minority or politician is involved? What I am asking is: How corrupt is the country?

7.    Is enrollment in the army mandatory during peace and/or war? If yes, what happens if I refuse?
