TLDR: how busy is the Jungfrau region in the fall and does the ease of access to beautiful scenery outweigh the crowds?
I'm headed to a family wedding in Ireland with my partner and 1 year old daughter at the end of October coming from Canada, and we are planning to spend some time in the Alps ahead of the wedding.
We'll be flying into Paris because it is, by far, the cheapest option for us to get to Europe. Then we're thinking we'll take the train, stopping in Dijon, Strausberg, or Lausenne (we like wine!) en route to the Jungfrau region for maybe 5 or 6 nights.
Our idea of a good time is hiking or canoeing in challenging or remote areas to enjoy nature and avoid other people! Our baby isn't quite up for that kind of vacation just yet, particularly the long drives involved, so our priority is being able to access beautiful hikes and scenery (below 2000m) conveniently. We don't want to rent a car and having amenities nearby like restaurants, bathrooms, groceries etc. will make things easier.
Everything I read seems to suggest heading to the Jungfrau region would be best. However, I am nervous about crowds in early-mid October. I know the parks near us become inundated with tour buses of people trying to see fall colours. Would we expect the same? Can we avoid these crowds if we stayed in Mürren, for example, as our home base or should we avoid the region entirely?
