Should I rent an RV or a car? Visiting Switzerland for 9 days!

Hello everyone!

I will be visiting Switzerland (landing in Zurich) end of August for 9 days and I'm trying to make an itinerary.

I had initially planned to stay in Zurich all 9 days, with the intention to use the train (or other transportation) to visit anything around the city reachable within a day so I could always get back to the hotel in time.

But then I thought I'd have plenty of time to travel around with either:

  • A car (and spend 1-2 days in a place/city with multiple stops between each destination) or with
  • An RV visiting as many destinations as possible and camping near any place the night catches me

Whatever the plan is, I would also like to spend the last 2-3 days in Zurich, so I can explore the city before my departure and maybe use the train to visit anything around that might have been out of my route while I was traveling.

I feel like car hotel option has less things to worry about (parking, where to sleep, bathroom), but offers less flexibility and you'd have to book your hotel stays ahead so you don't have to worry about this every day you reach a destination. With an RV on the other hand, you can just park in a near camping once you feel like you are done for the day and wake up next day to start where you've left.

My questions to you all:

  1. What would you recommend/prefer and why?
  2. Which one do you think would be more costly?
    1. RV parking spots
    2. Car hotels
  3. Since it will be my first time with an RV (if I choose this option), is Switzerland the country to try this? I will probably get a small one so I can easily visit anything I want and also be able to park in big cities.
  4. If I do choose the RV, will I easily find spots to park for the night?
  5. Any places/cities I must visit (and how much I should stay), since I will have my own transportation and can plan my itinerary?

I numbered the questions so you can easily answer only those you are confident. Any input is valuable and I'd really appreciate everyone's opinion!
