ZVV Extension Ticket Question: How does it work?

I am not 100% sure how the extension ticket works or if I found a weird loophole in the system...

If I buy a 24h ticket for the red area (9.20 CHF) and a 24h 1-2 zone extension ticket (6.40 CHF) I can nearly use all of the zone via the blue arrows but cheaper (15.60 CHF vs. 17.80 CHF).

As an example: Winterthur - Zürich and Zürich - Uster. I would need 8 zones and thus would need to buy all zones, but with this "trick" I would pay less...

Am I missing something or does this actually work like i think it will?
