This might be simple and I may be overthinking it, but I never got the answer and it's been bothering me off-and-on over the years.
Here goes: when using the units of miles per gallon, we're measuring the efficiency of fuel usage. The units are basically a measure of length divided by a measure of length cubed. So, we're left with this useful thing which has the ridiculous units of inverse length squared. What is an inverse meter squared? Does anyone know a way to easily conceptualize or describe whatever this thing is?
