Does lightning apply natural selection to homogenize tree height among tree species in a community?
Post Body
Staring at a dead tree in my yard, I noticed it was the tallest one around. That made me think it was lightning that may have killed it and I thought... 'Oh, looks like that next tallest one is next.'
If lightning is always striking the tallest trees in a stand, won't that lead to a homogenization of height in a tree community via natural selection?
In a related aside, are there structural designs at the level of the organism that protect against tree death by lightning?
