Why does a human asphyxiate when their throat is cut?

Post Body
Apologies for the morbid question. To the best of my understanding, a ruptured jugular or throat results in rapid asphyxiation in humans. This confuses me somewhat, as I was under the impression that the respiratory system was driven exclusively by the lungs and diaphragm. If this is the case, they should still be able to breathe.
Alternatively, is death (as seen in half of all Hollywood films ever and some real-life scenarios) caused by blood loss in most cases?
