Why do ships have a huge bulb on the bottom of the stern?

See title. Pretty much every cargo ship has a bulb in the front of the ship underwater. I understand this improves efficiency but I donβt understand how. Intuition would say that a big round thing in front would make it less efficient rather than more. How does it make it more efficient?
