Why does road traffic get so much worse the evening before a holiday or storm? Where are all these commuters the rest of the week?

Post Body

So I'm in the path of the "big storm" heading towards the Northeast US. Obviously most people will be staying home tomorrow, because of the weather, effectively making it a "holiday" in traffic terms.

What I want to know is why traffic crawls to a standstill the evening before and is markedly worse than other days? Where do these people come from? Are they people who stay in hotels downtown during the week and only go home on weekends? Why isn't it this bad on Fridays?

Guys, I can't for the life of me figure this one out. I just don't know where these people are emerging from.
