Today there was M4.3 Earthquake 13km W of Whitesburg, Kentucky. While 4.3 is fairly trivial as far as earthquakes are concerned, there are media reports of distant cities like Cincinnati, OH, and Atlanta, GA experiencing shaking, but conflicting reports from much closer cities like Lexington, KY where more people have been reporting no human-felt shaking.
I understand very generally that the makeup of the earth in this area of the world allows earthquakes to be felt in a broader area, but it is actually reasonable to say that a 4.3 quake would be felt (by humans) ~200 miles away, while a city ~80 miles away experiences lesser noticeable effects? I expect that it is actually the case that there are different factors in the earth that determine the effects of an earthquake on each of these given cities, but could anyone explain more specifically what would be going on for cities like Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Lexington in this particular case?
