What happens to your anus and anal cavity when you have a stoma for a long period of time?

There's an AMA going on right now where someone had surgery that resulted in a stoma coming out of their stomach, bypassing the need for an anus. What happens to the anus during this time? Is any special maintenance required for the length of time the stoma is present?
