I have a polisci background, but the psychological / brainscience background of this question would be really interesting to know.

The idea I am trying to explore is what psychological processes have been studied that describe the experience of someone who realizes that their strongly held cultural or social beliefs are actually harmful.

Of course, much of this is incredibly subjective, but an example could be something to the effect of, 'a staunch Christian-nationalist realizing that their views about a woman's place in society as being subjugated to men is actual detrimental to the wellbeing of women'. While politically I understand the lineage and interaction of ideas relevant to this question (we could say Christian-nationalism and feminism), but is there research you know of about the psychological impact of actually making that realization at the personal level that your ideas can be harmful? (in this case, from the perspective of the Christian-nationalist).

Additionally - for context - I fully appreciate that every ideology has the potential to pose harm and everyone has the capacity to hold harmful ideas. So I am completely open to research in any 'political direction'. What I am looking for is the personal experience of that realization.
