Are there any specific exercises for developing certain personality traits? And do they work?
I could imagine exercises that force you to do something out of your comfort zone that reinforces certain types of behaviors or responses.
For example, if the aim is to develop extroversion, that would entail forcing yourself to start conversations with strangers. For conscientiousness I could imagine some kind of video game that's purposefully designed in such a way that you need to diligently keep track of multiple things at once and take care of each of them, in a way that's not very fun, in order to get a high score. For agreeableness, if you want to increase it, you could try volunteering, or actively listening, or trying to find ways to help people, or do some exercises where you put yourself in another's shoes, or learn peaceful conflict resolution, if you aim to decrease it, some kinds of assertiveness training, learning how to say "no" without being rude, etc. For openness to experience, you could on purpose aim to try new things each day, like different genres of music, different types of food, or you could try to read more books. For neuroticism, you probably want to decrease it, so I could imagine some exercises like exposure therapy, where you expose yourself on purpose to stressful situations, and try your best to stay calm and remain not too disturbed.
But, are there really such exercises out there and do they work? And can they backfire?
