What is the psychological purpose for adding a completely unassociated picture of a human face to an advertisement?

Obviously we are either consciously or subconsciously attracted to look at another person's face, but in billboards and other forms of static-image advertising, you see ads for almost anything, and somewhere they insert a headshot of a person... male, female, adult, child doesn't seem to matter, unless the advertisement is targeting a specific demographic. But what is the inner brain workings that draw us to that ad vs. another with no face?
