I'm trying to help a friend whose power wheelchair has stopped working. A manual chair that I can push around for him could at least work as a backup until we can figure out how to repair or replace the power chair (they're really expensive, and his insurance won't pay for another one until 2026). The only real requirement for a manual chair is that it have foot rests (a lot don't, which I was surprised by). If anyone has an old wheelchair they're not using to lend temporarily, or maybe something from an old injury or something that they won't ever need again, I could pick it up and give you his and my details for returning it. Money is tight, so we're hoping not to have to buy a manual wheelchair just to use temporarily, and then be further behind in affording a power wheelchair.
Also, does anyone know of a charity that helps disabled people get wheelchairs? Or have a lead on how a disabled person without income can get a power wheelchair some other way?
Please use Reddit's private message or chat feature for any conversation about a chair so we can share details, or ask me to message you if you don't know how. Thank you very much!
