Can a water softener connect to sewer waste line?
Post Body

I’m planning on installing a water softener. Unfortunately, the line bringing water into my house is on the other side of the finished basement from my furnace room with a drain. I was planning on running lines across the basement to put the water softener next to the furnace. My step father in law pointed out a sewer line in the closet next to where the water comes into the house (pictured here). This sounds unsafe as I wouldn’t want waste and bacteria to back up into the water softener tainting the house’s fresh water. He thinks there’s a way to do this safely and save myself a lot of work. Is there a safe say to do this, or am I better off running a line to use the furnace drain?
