I'm a little concerned for myself because I realized I may have picked up some fatalistic or deterministic ideas and have started to question whether I possess free will or not. The argument is as follows:
- (P1) Genetics and experience exclusively shape our personality
- (P2) We have no choice or control over ourselves
- (C) Therefore, our fate is entirely predetermined by external forces
Or alternatively:
- (P1) Our fate is entirely predetermined by external forces
- (P2) We have no choice or control over ourselves
- (C) Therefore, there is no meaning or point in trying to change or achieve anything.
I realize the first premise in either of the two arguments needs to be proven and cannot simply be accepted without any evidence, and that both of these are weak arguments. I've heard a lot about genetics and our experiences shaping us in psychology, though, so I cannot simply dismiss the idea either.
Can somebody please debunk this or recommend me resources with a concise, apt description of the issue?
