Have there always been disputes on meaning in philosophy?
Post Body
Disputes over meaning arenāt very rare in analytic philosophy, especially with the so-called ālinguistic turnā. Not only you have verificationists trying to formulate a general principle to diagnose specific philosophical utterances as meaningless, you also have people like van Inwagen who often complain that they just donāt understand what their opponents are saying.
Iāve the impression that this is a relatively new phenomenon. Am I wrong? Are there precedents in the history of philosophy?
