Hello, Two years ago my grandfather (72) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. His mother (My great-grandmother) had it and so the diagnosis was made fairly quickly. His symptoms were the following:
My aunt noticed about 4 years ago that my grandfather began "shuffling" while he walked, and it progressed over time, with her affectionally referring to him a "shuffleupagus". When we asked him about it he described it as "Kind of like when you're walking in mud and your boot gets stuck" or that they were "kind of glued".
About 3 years ago he started to develop the dementia symptoms. Mainly forgetting what he was doing, or making decisions. Things like trying to check his blood sugar became an hour long ordeal with us having to remind him several times. He also lost interest in any of his activities such as working in the community workshop that he was previously the head of, and only wanted to sit and watch TV all day. It was a pretty dramatic shift for him.
And finally, last year he developed both urinary and bowel incontinence, resulting in his urologist installing a stimulation device that has had no effect as of yet.
(I should note that about 4 and a half years ago while at my cousins wedding, my grandfather fell and hit his head in the hotel shower with enough force that he broke several tiles. We tried to get him to get checked out, but in typical old man hard-headedness he refused. His first symptoms started shortly after this fall.)
Last month we finally got him to see a neurologist and an MRI was ordered. When i did some research into the results, NPH popped up, and i was floored. These were the exact issues that my grandfather was suffering from. He saw the neurologist today and told my grandparents that he saw no signs of a stroke or clot on the MRI, but said nothing about the possibility of NPH. Is there enough evidence to push back on the neurologist and ask him to take a second look?
I know that these issues can present in both Alzheimer's, and NPH. My gut tells me that there is something off, but i wanted to get some professional advice before i began to pursue second opinions.
EDIT: Added photo of MRI findings.
