What the ideal number of votes to give to players in a voting game?
Post Body

Not sure if this is the right subreddit but I was hoping someone could give me an idea of the ideal number of points to give participants in a voting game based on the number participants in said game. (Also not sure what flair to use)

To give context the game is a music submission game where you all submit songs that fit a prompt and everyone distributes the points among the submissions to show which ones they like the most. The game I'm playing has 9 participants and therefore 8 songs to vote on each round. What is the ideal number of points to give each player so that they have enough to show their favourites but not so many that they feel they just have to dump points into songs they don't really care about.

Right now I've done the triangle number of 7 so they can rank them from 0 points for last and 7 points for first and then they could shift points around from there. However I'm worried this might be too many.

Is there a maths solution to this problem?
