Can I ask for your help interpreting this section? First I wanna ask, what's the physical interpretation of the variables u and x?

I'm having a hard time developing the physical intuition behind this calculations. I do get the linear algebra part behind this but as for the application, I'm completely new to this. This is an excerpt from Strang's Introduction to Linear Algebra 5th edition. Here's the entire subsection if you want to read it:
