Managers, why are you concerned about gaps in employment?
Post Body

Iā€™m curious what reasons managers have for being put off by job seekers who have gaps in employment.

Life happens and there are any number of legitimate reasons that a person may need to take a step back from working.

Barring criminal activity and egregious misconduct with a former employer, why would you pass over someone with a gap in employment? What do you think about the pressures we put on people with gaps in employment?

What advice would you give them not to be passed over?

I got laid off and in between took 2 contract jobs while taking classed to update my skills. Before that layoff, I was a stay at home mom for 10 years and I freelanced off and on. Would that come across as a red flag?

I have young kids. But in my 20s, I struggled with an illness and was focused on treating it. But those were not relevant jobs as I'm a career changer.

Would a freelance work for 7 years, then a FT job for a year and a half (layoff), and then 2 contract jobs while schooling be a red flag?
