I got uncomfortable by my coworker's comment regarding my facial structure and I don't wannabe friends with her anymore
Post Body

So I've been living in japan for 6 months now and I have a temporary job. I got along with one of my coworkers and we decided to hang outside of work. When we were having lunch one she said she liked my face because I have sharp nose and thin eyes, and she made that racist gesture by stretching her edge of her eyes with her fingers. She's Japanese and I'm Japanese American. I'm assuming she didnt know that gesture was racist. But it was so unexpected and I was so shocked and confused that I didn't know how to respond. Plus I didnt like being told I have thin eyes. She apologized if she offended me and showed me pictures of how having thin eyes was considered beautiful in old Japanese culture. I changed the topic ATM but honestly I just don't wanna stay friends anymore. I am not gonna say one is better than the other but where I lived, it was a taboo to comment on people's physical feature for it might make that person feel uncomfortable. Is it normal to comment on people's physical feature in japan? And am I thinking too much for wanting to end my friendship with her? I've known her for couple of months. Thanks everybody
