Any tips on getting a front desk job in NYC?

Hi. I recently moved to NYC, and have been looking for a front desk position. I have about a year of experience at a 130 room property in a small town in NJ. A lot of hotels in NY though seem to prefer NYC experience. I would love to get into a unionized hotel, but those places are even more competitive than non-union.
