Stonewall didn't start LGBT activism around the world of course. But the first pride parade was a commemoration of this event, later on the parades spread to the rest of the world. Just as the current events are being felt in places other than the US, the Stonewall riots had ripple effects around globe. The parades are supposed to create visibility and an environment where queer culture is represented. I'm a transplant but we shouldn't ignore the impact this had worldwide, specially in places where being gay had always been considered taboo.
