I’m 26 years old and I’m significantly overweight. In addition I have been a Type 2 diabetic since 2016. I’ve taken about 10 medications a day for the past two years and I’ve finally come to the conclusion that this is not how a 26 year old should be living.
I’ve decided to start taking care of myself both nutritionally and physically. I’ve been given a diet by my doctor to use as a starting point. I’m also committing to exercising at least 5 times a week. Not quite sure what exercise just yet, but I’ll decide in time.
My realistic goal is to drop about 100 pounds within 1-2 years so I no longer have to take those daily medications anymore. My idealistic goal (more of a farce really) is to one day have abs I can flaunt during the summer. That, however, is not my main goal. Really, I just want to be healthy again.
Anyway, as I start this difficult journey I was curious, for you Gaybros into fitness, what is something you wish you had been told when first started taking care of your body?
Edit: I made a post earlier in r/loseit where I posted a picture of my medications and stated my goals. A user who saw my post messaged me and stated the following:
Telling others about your goals before you’ve made any progress makes you LESS likely to accomplish them. dont pat yourself on the back yet
When I stated I disagreed he followed up with
its been proven in studies. U get a sense of accomplishment and it makes success less likely. U feel good even tho U are yet to put in work.
I really see nothing wrong with posting goals so I told him so. The exchange left me a bit unnerved as failure to follow-through is one of the things that I'm most afraid of.
