I think there's so much about Laura Palmer, especially if you watch the movie, "Fire Walk With Me", that gay men or young gay men can indentify themselves with.
The tortured life of pain, of trying to frame yourself as living the ideal life but underneat you're riddled with self-destruction and doubt, living in a home with a father you're terrorized by but at the same time yearn for his love and an uncaring and absent mother and trying to drown your misery through a promiscuous life.
So much of Laura is about gay suffering.
