What can a gay nerd do to find community?

It's easy for me to find community for my outdoor interests (for running there's the Frontrunners clubs. For hiking there's tons of gay hiking groups in the Vancouver area).
But I struggle to find friends to read non-fiction books together (or even LGBTQ romance novels). Or to talk history with (e.g. WW2, or how a tiny Spanish city shaped Los Angeles).
What can I do to find community for my nerdy interests?
