I kind of forgot what this was like. Went out for a work event tonight with some clients, and work sat me between two WASPY straight clients that I don’t know. It was pretty terrible. Kind of reminded me of what high school was like.
They talked about football, fraternities, fraternity mischief, child sports, and summer camps. I had nothing to contribute to these conversations because I’m gay. So, I sat in the middle of two WASPY dudes who literally just talked to each other OVER me as if I wasn’t there and made no attempt to include me in the conversation. Even though I was quite literally right in the middle of the conversation. Just ignored me.
It was kind of triggering and offensive. Hadn’t felt this way in decades. The implication is you aren’t like us so we’re not even going to acknowledge that you’re here (and we’re probs silently judging you for not engaging with these conversations you can’t relate to).
Anyone else? Would they have done this if I was a woman? I suspect not. It’s pretty rude.
