Why have pum and dumps become so popular? Or have they always been?

With rise of apps like Sniffies it seems cum dump and pump and dumps have become super popular and mainstream gay culture. Why is this? It seems to be very hyper sexual (which isn’t a bad thing just suprised) yet it seems to be kind of common now? Or maybe it just appears that way.
