I'm beginning my journey into becoming a mortician. I am starting school at the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service this fall, but am attending online out of state. I am required to assist in 12 embalmings during this program, and am responsible to find a funeral home to partner with.
Currently I live in Colorado, where licensing is not required. It should be easy to find a funeral home here to partner with. However, my wife and I have been ready for a change of scenery for a while now and it feels like this is an excellent time to do so. We're planning on moving to Nevada, which has some pretty intense licensing requirements. So I was wondering if anyone who is licensed there could answer some questions for me.
First off... How do I approach a funeral home and ask to apprentice there? Do I just call or email or should I walk right in? Is there a possibility that I could get hired on during my apprenticeship? Is this something I could start before moving - just reach out to some funeral homes to see if they have openings and would be willing to let me apprentice there? Do you have to get a separate license for funeral directing, embalming, and crematory operation?
Any insight is much appreciated. Whatever information or tips you may have is invaluable to me. I just don't know where to start. I'm willing to pull my retirement and move but I'm afraid to lose my income and benefits without knowing that I can find a job in Nevada (thankfully we have family that will let us live there until we're settled).
Thanks in advance!
