Hi all, hoping I can get help in clearing some confusion.
I had a crown break a while back and needed replacement. Initially, my dentist said she would recommend gum removal, as there wasn't enough space for the crown. The crown was attached to an abutment/implant.
I got a second opinion from another dentist, and she disagreed. She said my gums were fine. The problem, in her opinion, was the decision by my previous dentist for a 2 piece abutment/crown. For whatever reason, a one-piece crown/abutment was best for my circumstance, although I'm not sure why.
I talked to my primary dentist about this issue more than a year later (long story- I couldn't get it right away) and I told her I wanted to get a one-piece as the other doctor opined. She said that was fine. When I got the paperwork from the insurance verifying the amount of coverage, I noticed 2 codes, 2 pieces. D6057/05 and D6059/05
I called the dentist to elaborate. I was told that there was no such thing as a true 1 piece, what the other doctor meant was screw-retained crown, as opposed to the regular cement. They would screw it together in their lab. I wanted to ask the second doctor who gave me the second opinion to verify this was the recommendation, but the problem is I haven't been able to reach, and the fact it's been so long probably doesn't help.
Can a dentist please help verify if that's correct- these two pieces are what is referred to as a "one piece", which are screwed together at a dentist's lab? Or is my dentists' office dropping the ball here? This work is expensive, and I want to make sure I get it right this time.
Thanks in advance.
