My dentist referred me to a periodontist and suggested that I get a gum graft for my lower teeth (see photo).
I had a consult with the periodontist, who recommended that I first get braces to realign my teeth prior to the graft. He claims that by doing this the benefits of the gum graft procedure will last longer.
I then spoke to an orthodontist, who often works with this specific periodontist. He recommended that I come in for a proper diagnostic test, which he would then review the findings of in collaboration with the periodontist and devise a treatment plan for braces first (maybe for 6-18 months), and then the gum graft.
A bit about my teeth: I had braces as a kid and still have a permanent back brace on my lower teeth. I also regularly vape nicotine.
My question: do you think getting braces first is worth it? Will it really optimize the long term results of the gum graft? Or seeing as the orthodontist and periodontist have a working relationship, could there be ulterior financial reasons for the braces recommendation?
