So I'm pretty Floored right now. I've never heard of this before. But am I just dumb?

We are in KY

We owned a jeep for 2 years, and last year, traded it in for a dodge charger. At the time, the tags were due to be renewed by April 30th. We traded the car on April 1st.

When we went to fo renew tags for the new car today, they stated we needed to pay more than double, almost tripple, what we expected to pay because they said we still needed to pay taxes on the jeep.

I had assumed they'd be taken care of by the dealership whatever. Or they'd get absorbed when the dealer filed the taxes for the new car? I don't know. But I'm pissed no one said anything to us about it

Is this a normal thing ?
