Reason for strange noise in car while turning?

My car makes a very strange noise, almost exclusively when turning left. It sounds almost like sliding sand or like liquid rushing around. My dad described it as a grinding sound, but I disagree. You can also hear it when I’m braking hard, but never when it’s turning right. I’m going on a longer trip in two days so I’d love to know if this is a serious issue or a minor one that can wait a couple hundred miles. Thank you.
