Last night my friend celebrated her birthday. She wanted to go to a dance club. I looked online at some pictures of the place we were going and recognized that we would likely be in the minority as white people. We were also probably on the older side of the demographic.
So we went and had a nice time but we were definitely in the minority by a lot. We also appeared to be the only group of white people there that I saw. There were a few other white people but they seem to be in groups with people of color.
I don’t know if this is white liberal guilt or actually an issue but I definitely felt some discomfort. I have no problem with people of color coming into historically white spaces but the reverse feels wrong. Obviously it was not explicitly a black space but maybe we should take the hint and not go there? Or am I over thinking this?
My friend works in social justice/related fields So I figured if she was not bothered by it I shouldn’t be either. But I don’t really know what to do.
Somewhat related question. There were some songs that were played that included the N-word. Most of the time when I go to places that word is bleeped out. Obviously I don’t know every song that includes that word but is there something wrong with a white person dancing to a song that includes that word?
