I'm asking this to all foreign journalists and correspondents living and working in Berlin or anyone who is familiar with the situation I'm about to describe.
I've been working full-time in a news agency since January 2020. I was initially given an 18C (Fachkrafte) work visa stamped in my non-EU passport. Then the next year in 2021 and this year in 2022 I was given an ID card with an 19C work visa. It was confusing to me because 19C is usually for non-skilled workers so I asked LEA and they told me there was a change in the law regarding in March 2020 and to not compare the residence permits that I have received so far. There is apparently a section covering foreign journalists in ยง 18 BeschV.ย
My question is this: Can I still apply for permanent residency (Niederlassungerlaubnis) in 4 years (now 2 years because I've already been working for 2 years) as a Fachkrafte or is that option off the table with this law change? Have any of you been in a similar situation? When I asked LEA, they simply pointed me to ยง 9 AufenthG without actually answering my question about the time period needed before you can apply.
