How do I make sure a binary system is detached?
Post Body

I'm designing a star system for a D&D campaign and want to make it scientifically accurate/feasible before adding in the magical components . The star system is composed of a main sequence Class A star (S') and a late sequence Class M star (expanding, S") co-orbiting their barycenter. I think I'll be working with Roche Lobes and/or Roche limits but what I've found online concerning those are confusing me. I'm more looking for a walk through/explanation on how to calculate it myself. However, if you want to walk me through it using my values, here are some of the values for my system that I believe are necessary.

  • S' is 1.65 solar masses with a radius of 1.45 solar radii or 0.00675 AU
  • S" is 0.790 solar masses with the same radius as S'
  • Their orbital distance from one another is 621 solar radii or 2.89 AU
  • Their barycenter is 201 solar radii or 0.937 AU from S'
