I am writing a story that blends sci-fi with slight fantasy elements (mainly certain degrees of magic)
And while there are certainly things that are on the ''pure fantasy'' side of things i do like to keep at least some things somewhat scientifically plausible/feasible.
Now, i know we have never discovered a star with more than 8 planets orbiting it (or 9 depending on if/when or how that whole ''planet 9'' thing will ever get solved), but does that mean more than 8 could not be possible?
I just really like the idea of a pretty big planetary system with quite a lot of planets around it, however since i do not want this story to just go full ''whatever i want/fantasy'' if i can help it, i thought i would ask here.
So my question boils down to ''How many planets could potentially (as science currently understands) orbit a single star?''
