Why is the path of a total eclipse so wide and what are the benefits to being in the exact center?

Post Body

It's always been my lifelong goal to see a total eclipse, but I'm also lazy and don't want to travel so this will be my 3rd partial eclipse next week. I intend to live till 2099, and at 113 years old I'll be able to see one from my doorstep. I'm sure there'll be no clouds and my eyesight will still be perfect thanks to robotic implants that'll be common by then.

But seriously, I've learned a lot about eclipses this morning, partial, total, annular and hybrid. I get all that. But what I don't get is why there's such a massive range as to where you can see a total eclipse.

Looking at the map, that range is about 120 miles wide? Can you see a total eclipse just as well 60 miles either side of the center of the path line? Is there any difference in viewing the eclipse in Toronto compared to buffalo?
