Garbage disposal will not seat

Good Morning, I am installing a garbage disposal, and I cannot get it to join to the upper mount ring. When I try, it seems like the o-ring is too thick (I know it's not, I just don't have a better description). It seems to be about 3/8" away from the upper mount ring. I believe the sink flange is seated correctly. I did search the the post history, and I didn't see an answer, if there is one please send me the link and I will delete this one
