Is my water softener working?

Recently moved to an area with hard water (SW Kansas), and we have a water softener. I'm having to clean the screen on my kitchen faucet just about every day. The particles are white and about the size of a grain of salt. Does this mean the water softener isn't working? It has salt and I know it's regenerating every week or so because the salt level goes down.
